the Copywriter

it has been days since i had a good night sleep. every night, in the dark, thoughts raced through my mind. my eyes are tired but my brain would not stop thinking. perhaps those are the only moments where i am in peace and my head is clear to think. but if this were to continue, i don't think it will be so much of a happy new year today. so tonight, on new year's eve, this is what i will do; get a good night's sleep. it may seem like a lame way to celebrate the new year, but what better way to begin one with a good rest? i know quite a lot of people who would kill for such an opportunity. however, this is not what this post is about. it just happens that i finally came round to writing this entry on the eve of 2014.

He, the Copywriter

the word copywriter is a familiar one to me but I've never really known what it really means until that day. i didn't notice it on his profile until a colleague pointed it out. he is a copywriter. i finally did what i should have done a long time ago; right-click and select 'search Google for copywriter'. what i found out was very interesting indeed.

"Copywriting is writing copy (text) for the purpose of advertising or marketing" -Wikipedia

"An advertising creative copywriter/ director should:

  • be highly creative and imaginative, and curious about clients' products or services
  • be skilled in writing clear, concise and grammatically correct copy
  • understand the different language styles that appeal to various target markets
  • have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • work well in a team and with a range of creative people
  • be able to work under pressure and manage workloads effectively
  • be highly self-motivated and well organised
  • be able to see other people's points of view and take board feedback
  • work within strict budgets
  • have an eye for detail
  • possess good leadership, people and project management skills"

so that is what he does. everyday, i see him walk pass our office. it never occur to me that he is someone who writes copies for the purpose of advertising or marketing. it peaks my interest even more now to think that he might possess those traits (Especially the highlighted ones). i can only imagine how good he is words, to string out a sentence at an instance or how creative and imaginative he can be to come up with crazy new ideas that will make an impact in an advertisement or a campaign. his attention to detail can be both impressive and irritating too i assume. having said that, i think it is obvious now that we do not know each other; not personally anyway.
he is just another person whom i've crossed paths with and would really like to know. unfortunately, the opportunity hasn't presented itself yet. honestly, i don't think it'll ever happen. however, it gives me something to look forward to when i go to work every day. i am not suggesting that i hate my job or anything like that. this is just something that will make my day a little brighter, a sort of entertainment on gloomy days.

Me, the Copywriter

it wasn't too long after i found out that he is a copywriter when my boss started asking me to compose new year greetings for parents and the company's posts.
"She is our copywriter" says she.
my colleague and i exchange knowing looks with each other. my heart leaped in my chest with so much joy. finally! i have something in common with him. well, not so much in common, but you get what i mean. i am the acting copywriter in my place and he is a copywriter in his place. it feels good to know that silly little fact. what my boss said, it gave me a boost of confidence i needed. alas, the first thing i did was to deny it, reminding myself not to let it go to my head but at the same time, i felt so happy. it is all very amusing actually.

and right after i finish the previous paragraph, i got a call from a cray-cray buddy of mine. we've known each other for more than half of our lives and we love and hate each other. lol. so that's it for my new year's eve/new year post. i wish all of you a blessed year ahead with a lot of exciting adventures. may you hav elots of great stories to tell your grandchildren (or someone else's grandchildren). chao!
